Hot Summer Bite
Summer Tarpon Fishing is continuing in the upper harbor with good numbers of fish to be caught, early in the morning is best. Live threadfins under a float drifted through the area will produce. Avoid running through the area with the big motor, use the trolling motor or upwind drift approach. If you use the big motor wait until you are well away from your fishing area and idle a big circle to come back into position.
Red fishing is good with scattered fish under the bushes at high tides. I prefer artificial jerk baits skipped way back in the cuts of the overhangs slow retrieve with twitching action. For live bait shrimp is best free lined and tail hooked. Look for these fish to start schooling up as August approaches.
Snook fishing is still good near the beaches and passes. White bait is best and is still available around the harbor. Some of these fish are still spawning so the season will remain closed until Mid August, and the fish should have at that time started there migration pattern back to the flats and back country. This is being experienced now with some of the fish that have spawned out.
We usually mix the trips up this time of year and target tarpon early morning snook and redfish later in the day. So the chances of a Charlotte harbor slam are pretty good, and if you happen to get a trout than you have the coveted Grand Slam.
